Dear Parents,
The summer reading program at Nativity is a way to develop in your child a love for reading and to maintain the current level of skills that your child has worked to achieve during the school year. Many studies suggest that children who continue to read books on "vacation" maintain their reading level, and are better prepared to tackle school work when school begins in August. We hope that you will enthusiastically support this program and make reading a daily part of your child's summer.
Happy reading!
Michael Falco, Principal
Read up!
Summer reading can (and should) be fun. Yet, it helps the child academically. Encourage your family to use the summer to read for fun. Let them select and read books that interest them - that they will truly enjoy!
The Torrance and Los Angeles County Library Systems have created wonderful Summer Reading Programs for kids that are presented at each library throughout the county. Be sure to check with your local library, enroll your children, and have them participate in it.
Make it a habit to visit the library each week (or more) to borrow an interesting supply of reading materials. These visits will prove to be some of the most important activities you can share with your family this summer.
You may notice that many of the books listed include their Lexile Score after the book description. In order to help students choose books on their reading level, it is helpful to know about the Lexile Framework for Reading. This framework is a scientific approach to measuring readers and reading materials. The Lexile measure reflects the difficulty of a text. Your child's Lexile measure indicates his or her reading ability. Knowing the Lexile level of a book and the Lexile measure of a reader helps predict how the book matches the student's reading ability.
The recommended Lexile range for choosing reading text is 50L above and 100L below their Lexile measure. This means that if a child's Lexile level is 880L, they should choose books in the Lexile range from 830L to 990L. Keep in mind that Lexile levels measure the reading difficulty of a book - they do not take into account the maturity level of the reader, so please choose books wisely.
Student Lexile levels can be found on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) Student Report under the "Reading" category.
Within every classroom, students' Lexile levels will vary. Lexiles track a student's reading progress over time, no matter what grade they are in. For more information, log on to www.lexile.com.
